ICEE works with Texas, national, and international partners to develop, implement, and research the integration of the arts and innovation thinking with required learning in science, math, and language arts in K-12 schools and out-of-school settings.

Rationale

Nationally-recognized researchers, educators, businesses, governments, universities, and school systems point out that, in order to be successful in the 21st century, our nation and students must develop vital 21st century thinking skills. These include: conceptual thinking, creative and critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creative problem solving.

Objectives

  1. Meet the national and international mandates to train students and teachers in the vital 21st century skills that lead to innovation.
  2. Accomplish this through integrating state-mandated curriculum with these important skills.
  3. Increase student and teacher curriculum engagement and learning through integrating state-mandated learning with creative thinking.
  4. Promote lifelong interest and engagement in STEM, the arts, and creative thinking.

Strategies

1.     Provide learning that:
a.     Is: 1) Hands-on; 2) research-based; 3) emotionally engaging, inviting excitement and playfulness
b.     Involves: 1) Basing the project on school and district needs; 2) uses standards-based vocabulary and content; 3) uses problem-based learning, inviting problem-finding and problem-solving; 4) uses critical and creative thinking; 5) strongly integrating concepts across the curriculum; 6) promotes collaboration and communication among students; 7) provides relevance to real-world problems; 8) immerses students in the science phenomena; 9) assesses and continually improves the experiences
